Hunting Foreigners
Sunday, 20 April 2014
That day was a great day ever for
me and my little students. We had much experience in chasing many foreigners to help us practice English. We
decided to go to Borobudur as our object in hunting foreigners.
We went there around eight in the
morning. My students and I got off from a car at parking lot and we tried to
find a foreigner there as soon as possible. But, the result was nothing, so we
decided to go to entrance area and trail after two female foreigners. They
entered a specific office just for foreign visitors with hurry steps. Oh my
God, that was difficult for us to find foreigners at the first minute.
But, not so long we could meet
two foreigners from Norway. They were Britt with two braids and her husband with glasses. I tried to ask her in helping and supporting my
students to be brave in practicing their English.
“Excuse me, I’m Riska and I’m the
teacher of theirs. They are my students who want to practice English, so, can
you help me to motivate them practice their English?” I asked Britt with a
nervous tone.
So, with a bright smile, Britt
asked my students name and she explained her experience. That was a nice
beginning. We said thanks them and made high five, they finally went to another
place with their guide.
Some minutes later, we were still
there to find other foreigners, but the result was nothing anymore.
I saw a young male foreigner with shorts and a
backpack that I thought he was female, I tried to get closer and asked to speak
English to my students. But, when he answered, I realized that he actually real male.
“Excuse me, I’m Riska and I’m the
teacher of theirs. They would
like to speak English to foreigners, and can you help them?” With high confidence, I asked him.
“Uhu, yea....” he tried to help me with a confused face.
“Hey,,, bla bla bla...” There was
an old man called him and asked him to get closer to him. I thought that he was
his guide.
“I’m sorry, I have to go.” He
said with apologizing blue
eyes.
I just showed my smile and let
him go.
Finally, my landlady accompanying
us asked me to buy tickets and enter the gate.
“I think we must enter the gate
to get more foreigners.” My land lady tried to whisper me while giving me much
money.
I bought some tickets and we finally
entered the gate. I found two foreigners again under a big tree. I tried to
introduce myself and the
students of mine. They were Angela having
short curly hair and her husbands with blue t-shirt. They were kind and friendly.
“My name is Angela, what is your
name?” Angela Asked Izza, one of my students.
“Hello, my name is Izza, nice to
meet you..” Izza answered the question and tried to be brave in practicing English
with a foreigner.
“Do you like Indonesia?” Izza
asked to Angela.
“Of course, Indonesia is green
and the people are friendly like you.” The kind Angela answered.
Suddenly, there were two girls
came in and greeted us.
“They are my daughters, one of them can speak Indonesian.” Angela explained me when they
got closer to us.
“Hallo, apa kabar?” Tania greeted us with a beautiful smile.
“Hi, can you speak Indonesian?” I
asked Tania with wavy blond hair
wearing red dress and red scarf
“Yea, bisa, saya bisa bahasa
Indonesia.” With a foreigner accent she tried to answer my question.
“Well, but, my students want to
practice English to foreigners,
can you help them to speak English?” I asked Tania and Nadine after I
introduced myself to both of them.
“Oh, okay,, my name is Tania and
this is Nadine. What is your name? Asked Tania to my students.
After we met them, we went to
other places and decided to go to the
peak of Borobudur. On
the way, I met the young male
foreigner and he greeted me then got closer to me.
Izza, one of my students got
closer to him and asked a question, but, there was an old woman pulling him.
“Oh, I think you have to go.” I
smiled, he looked so confused and guilty in leaving us two times.
“I’m so sorry, they are my family
and we are walking up, are you walking up?” He asked me with a hurry tone.
“Yea, we are walking up.” I
answered and tried to keep smiling although I didn’t like it and the weather
was getting hotter.
“See you.” He tried to make me
feel better.
“See you.” I answered.
Before continuing our exploration,
we were asked to wear saroong. So, my land lady and I got saroong to be worn on
our hips.
Then, my students
and I continued the
exploration until the peak
without my land lady. She was tired and did not want to go to peak.
At the peak, we found Yumiko from
Japan, a beautiful Russian, a granny from a country that I couldn’t catch what she said. Actually, she
couldn’t speak English. Oh my lord, I was so confused what I should say when I met a foreigner who cannot speak
English. I was also almost dried there because of the sun bright. When
we decided to exit, I saw the male foreigner again and I hope that would be our
last meeting. I was so ashamed because when my students and I would like to
practice our English with him, there must be something disturbing.
Finally, we could exit from the gate, but the way to exit and to go
to exit gate was so far. We were exhausted and felt so hot. We were also
starving and weak. We waited for my landlord in picking us up to go back. Then
we had lunch at a siomay store. Afterward, we went back to the boarding house
and talked much about our experience. That was really nice experience for us although
we must be tired and ashamed.
